I've decided that most
professions in WoW are largely a waste of time, at
least until level 40. For all toons under level 40,
I've switched them to herbalism and skinning. They're
getting filthy rich as a result....

I've switched them to herbalism and skinning. They're
getting filthy rich as a result.
Skinning is great because a lot of the grinding quests involve killing skinnable animals, and other players leave their kills lying around in droves. I think of them as free leather = free gold. Leather and hides always sell well at the AH.
For the second profession, I'm divided between herbalism and mining. Herbalism is hard to level up because the herbs aren't all that common. My lvl 40 warlock has been harvesting every herb he's seen since he was born and he's still not yet at 225. Mining isn't much better, but has an additional benefit, which is also a drawback. If you don't want to sell the raw ore, you have to get thee to a forge where you can smelt the damned stuff into bars, then sell it. That means carrying a lot of ore around while you're out adventuring
