that I keep a blog chronicling the exciting

The World of Warcraft is a massively multiplayer on-line role-playing game, or "MMPORG". It's also abbreviated "MMORG" and "MMORPG". But those are heretical usages by small groups of ignorant morons. Geeks can never agree on important things like the proper abbreviation for a needlessly over-long phrase until an official standard setting organization endorses one. Even then, heretical geeks will continue to pointlessly argue that the standard setters got it wrong.
Here's an erudite and insightful pieces about MMPORG's (even though the writer doesn't know the correct abbreviation). There are several popular MMPORGs around, but WoW is by far the biggest of them with over 8.5 million players worldwide. There are players in Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, all of North America and across Europe. There are about 2 million players in the US, 1.5 million in Europe and 3 million in China. (Psst! Hey! Get an account! We have to catch up with the Chinese!)
WoW is written, owned and operated by Blizzard Entertainment, which has had a number of other successful game titles to its credit. Blizzard never expected the success of WoW, but after some initial struggles to keep up with the server load, has done a bang up job of meeting the challenge.
The World of Warcraft is spread among numerous servers. Players can have up to 10 characters on each server. That's right - on each server. I know people who have upwards of 30 characters that they play. I have no idea how they do it. I have 10 characters and barely manage to play even 3 of them with any regularity. But then, I have a life, family and career. What that says about those other folks is ... well, you work it out.
I'm not going to explain the entire game. Suffice to say that it is very rich and detailed, and very engaging. You can learn more of the nitty gritty at Blizzard's site and at Wikipedia.
