A fool for a client

The adage goes, "a lawyer who represents himself has
a fool for a client." Today's fool is Roy
Pearson,Jr., a former Administrative Law Judge. He
took some laundry to Custom Cleaners to be dry
cleaned. Custom Cleaners lost his pants and Pearson
sued....

took some laundry to Custom Cleaners to be dry
cleaned. Custom Cleaners lost his pants and Pearson
sued.
Now, it's not really surprising that someone might take a dry cleaner to small claims court if they're really cranked up about some lost clothing. But Pearson filed his suit in the District of Columbia Superior Court claiming (drum roll please) $67.3 million. That's right. Pearson thinks that his personal outrage and his emotional distress, pain and suffering over the lost pants is worth $67.3 million.
Not wanting to appear completely unreasonable, he later knocked a few million off that figure and went to trial with a claim of only $54 million. That's still a pretty expensive pair of pants. Apparently, Pearson was so moved by his tragic loss that he actually cried in court.
